Common Types of Arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Degenerative and inflammatory changes increase the catabolism
of proteoglycans and glycoproteins.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
An abnormal functioning immune system, incapable of
recognizing its own tissue, manufactures antibodies against
the cartilage and bone tissues.
Gout
Deposition of uric acid crystals on the articular surface of
the joints.
All three of these types of arthritis lead to:

• Gradual loss of protioglycans that holds fluids inside the
cartilage tissue.
• Gradual loss of glycoproteins that holds the cells together
